Simon Blattner, Curator


Simon Blattner is not a professional curator but nevertheless has been able to express his love of paper and the book arts through the curation of three museum exhibitions. His most recent exhibition was the very popular Libros de Artista: Artist Books from Mexico and the Mexican Diaspora. It was this curatorial effort that spawned his newly released book, describing how he came to love Mexico and discover the Mexican book arts scene. The book also features full color photography and descriptions of 15 incredible works from the exhibition.


In January of 2025 his most recent curatorial effort, Book Becoming Art   –   本になった美術, will open at the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art.

DescriptionIt took over a thousand years for papermaking to come from China to the Western world.  Ancient Egyptians used Papyrus as a tool for writing and illustration, however Papyrus did not have the fiberous properties of constructed paper.  This exhibition of contemporary handmade paper objects demonstrates how paper is made and the historical tradition of this artform. The stunning beauty of this ancient craft should enhance your knowledge and please your senses.  Featuring Richard Seidl’s collection of Japanese papers produced in Japan prior to WWII as well as a selection of contemporary papermakers.
